It’s glamorous, it’s creative and you get to be your own boss. But what are the other Perks of being a Professional Makeup Artist? The industry is constantly changing and more and more people from all walks of life are becoming a paid makeup artist. If you have ever thought about becoming a paid professional Makeup Artist then let me sum up a few benefits of what you can expect…
1. Having additional spending money
Most of us look for a job that is not only going to fulfil us mentally and emotionally but also financially because someone has to pay the bills right? Becoming a paid makeup artist means your disposable income can be made in just a weekend. Artists have the potential to make anywhere between $500 – $1000 or more in doing just a simple wedding over a few hours. Most well established Makeup Artists will charge an hourly rate of anywhere between $100-$180. So if you did an average size wedding party of say 6 people, including bridesmaids ($100 each), mother of the bride ($100), flower girl ($50) and of course the Bride ($150), that’s an average of $700, and that’s not even including a travel fee, an early morning fee or even the trials!
Brands like MAC Cosmetics, Inglot, Mecca Cosmetica have a list of the many stores and brands that offer makeup discounts for artists, most discounts are at least 40% off! Although it’s meant to be for your business, you’ll still feel amazing saving all that money on great products AND being able to use them (on clients and on yourself) every day! It’s a great advantage to getting into the makeup industry—you’ll create the makeup kit your friends will be envious of and you have always dreamt of! And what’s great, is that you can write it all off on Tax too! Don’t be surprised if you suddenly become even more popular with your friends.
3. You will always look great!
Becoming a professional makeup artist means you should look the part. Modern, on-trend and with fabulous makeup and skin. Any proper makeup school will teach you not only about makeup, but also skincare, it goes hand in hand. Learning makeup and skincare hacks will help you to always look and feel your best in a matter of minutes, your friends will always be wondering just how you manage to look this way every single day, not knowing that it only takes you a few minutes in the morning to get ready.
4. Creativity at work
When we think of a job, we usually think of a boring 9 am – 5 pm job where we are sitting in a cubical, staring at a wall and with the pressure to perform or have an annoying manager down our throat. This is so far removed from the world of Makeup Artistry. Not only will makeup take you places, allowing you to get out there and work in different areas and meet different people, but it will also allow you to be creative with inspirational looks. Find inspiration in editorial spreads and film makeup. Adding a pop of colour or a unique eyeliner look can make your clients look fierce! Plus, you’ll be able to add these looks to your portfolio and show people your skills.
5. Giving people confidence
Without a doubt, this is the ultimate reason why I chose to become a Professional Makeup Artist. You see, I have been in the beauty industry since I was 17 years old, I have practically grown up amongst makeup, skincare and hair products. For most women, the most they have experienced with makeup is applying a bit of mascara and lipgloss every now and then. Words can not explain how rewarding it is, how it makes you feel when you have created a beautiful look on someone who has never experienced this. I have had many many women almost cry from happiness, they can’t believe how my work as an Artist has touched them, how it makes them feel, they never thought they could feel THIS beautiful. And that’s enough for me.
6. Work your own hours
Perfect for mums who are looking to add more value to their life apart from looking after the kids and the household. A great option for recent school graduates wanting to try a new and exciting career. A great choice for professionals wanting a career change – it’s never too late to start! You can work for a business or work for yourself. Stay at home mums can work from home, leave bubs with dad on the weekend and do their own thing, contribute to the household. Don’t like early morning starts? No problem, you can choose what times you want to work and where you want to work from. It’s so nice not having to be chained up to a 9 am – 5 pm, Monday to Friday job. You work fewer days and have the potential to earn more!
7. Working in cool places
Makeup artistry is such an interesting career, and there are so many different things going on in the industry. From SFX to bridal, to film and TV, the makeup industry is a fun work environment. Even working as a freelancing makeup artist is great—you get flexibility and can meet new clients as well as other artists. Getting inspired by other people’s work can help you in your own career. I mean, makeup is everywhere so it’s impossible to ignore all of the creative trends happening!
